GAZETTEER · THE VALE
The Waking Deep
aka The Hushing Deep
A bell-haunted barrow-annex in the eastern hills where the dead never got a proper closing — go armed, and don't sound anything you can't outrun.
An older mouth of the same dead country Vallen's Barrow guards, half-collapsed and full of standing stones the Mourners have hung with quieting bells. This is unclosed ground — dead who were never given the Last Guest's proper rite — and the bells are the Mourners' fix: ring the wrong one and something that should have stayed down gets up instead. Wonderful to find, dangerous to linger in: the deeper arches still answer when you make a sound.
