The Last Latch
aka The Threnody Bell
A hand-bell of temple-bronze paired with its own small latch-pin, cast by the Mourners to finish an ending on the spot — one of the Vale's few unique finds.
Small, heavy, and warm like everything Old Work salvaged from a sealed vault tends to be. Rung once and the latch-pin thrown in the same motion, it closes an ending on the spot — long enough to cross the answering hall before a wight notices you, or long enough to put a wight back to its rest entirely, because the rite it performs is the same rite that should have been done for it centuries ago and never was. The Mourners cast it for exactly this: barrows too full of the unclosed dead to close one at a time, the old-fashioned way. Someone took it; the Deep kept it.
