The Hung-Bell Marker
aka the Mourners' warning stone
A quieting bell and carved stone the Mourners of the Hush set at the mouth of the Waking Deep, telling anyone who reads it that this ordinary-looking barrow-annex is not the tier its Sheltered surroundings promise.
The stone is plain and the bell above it plainer, but the Mourners cut the same instruction into both: do not ring what you cannot outrun. Whoever left it meant it as a working rule, not a decoration. The rest of the Eastern Hills is walked country, herders and standing stone and nothing worse than a barrow-wight kept properly underground. This one mouth is the exception the rule was written for, and the bell hanging over it is the only sign, before the dark past the arch, that this is not that country anymore.
