The Long-Water Shrine
A waterline shrine to the Lady of the Long Water in the Underbridge — half temple, half diving-station, where the Hessk divers who recover the Vellen's drowned keep their long ropes, their held breath, and the still green lamp that asks the Lady to give a body back.
At the lowest wet edge of the Underbridge, where a water-stair goes down into the Vellen and does not come back up dry, the Hessk keep the Long-Water Shrine: a low vaulted room open to the river on one side, smelling of silt and tallow, hung with the coiled diving-ropes and weighted belts of the trade. The Lady of the Long Water keeps the drowned — this is the plain Hessk creed, not metaphor — and she returns nothing until asked correctly, so the divers do the asking with their bodies, going down on a held breath into the black to bring up what the river took, that the Mourners upstairs may close it properly. Vashka tends the shrine and leads the dives; she has brought up more of Highbridge's dead than the Hush-House has rolls for, and she keeps a green lamp burning at the water's edge that is never, ever let go out, because the divers believe a lightless water-door is one the Lady stops giving back through. The shrine is grief made practical: a bereaved family comes here, not to the great terrace chantry, when the river has someone of theirs, and pays in coin or in kind for a diver to go and ask. It is the one place in the city where drowning is a thing that can, sometimes, be undone — and the one place honest enough to say how often it cannot.
