The Farglass Shoulder

aka the glassman's ridge

A rock shoulder above the Highbridge road where the ground climbs just enough to clear the tree-line — the one place on the corridor where a field-glass earns its price, and the reason half the spyglasses sold in Highbridge get bought.

The Shoulder isn't a peak, isn't a pass, isn't on the way to anything — it's a stubborn knuckle of rock that the road happens to skirt, fifty feet above the flat, and it is worth every one of those fifty feet. Turn east on a clear morning and the haze over Highbridge's terraces resolves into individual roofs; keep turning and, on the rare cloudless day, a spark of gold hangs impossibly in the sky well past the city where nothing should be able to hang — Aelvyrenn, the sky-Vyr's floating seat, small as a coin at this distance but unmistakably there once you know to look. Turn west and the Vale opens flat and green all the way to Valenfeld's smoke. It is the one spot on the whole walk where the corridor stops feeling like a road between two towns and starts feeling like the edge of a much bigger map. A one-eyed peddler called Orn Glass — nobody remembers if that's a real name or one he grew into — used to camp here selling secondhand field-glasses to travelers who'd just seen, for the first time, exactly how much they couldn't see. He's gone now, dead or moved on, nobody's sure which, but the name stuck to the rock and the habit stuck to the road: caravan-guards still call it out to green hands making the walk for the first time, half as a courtesy and half so they can watch the newcomer's face when the sky-city swims into focus.
