The Guildrows

The terraced middle of Highbridge, where every guild in the Vale keeps a door within shouting distance of every rival's — the Far College's reading-hall, the Marrow Lances' company-house, the trade benches, and a street plan deliberately built so no two enemies share a wall.

Between the ruling terrace and the roaring crossing, the Guildrows step down the bank in tight stone tiers, and this is where an outlander with a trade or a grudge does business. Every power that matters keeps a hall here because Highbridge is where the roads meet and first look at any salvage is worth more than a mine: the Far College's Listening-Post with its cold blue assay-lamp, the locked High Room of the Wrights' Heirs one flight above it, the blunt grey Marrowhall of the company-soldiers, the enchanters' and smiths' trade benches wedged into the arcades between. The Rows are laid out on one hard-won rule — no two rival halls share a party wall — a peace enforced by masonry after the Bench Riot of the lean winter burned three houses and taught the moot that guilds who cannot reach each other cannot brawl. So the halls face outward onto the stepped street, doors a polite dagger-throw apart, and the whole quarter hums with drill-yards, argument, hammered metal and the particular courtesy of enemies who have agreed to compete for the same coin instead of killing for it. This is the first place a newcomer is told to go, and the fastest place in the Vale to be sized up by everyone at once.
