The Last Word
aka The Hushbell
A small bronze hand-bell cast by Kessa's people to mourn a death that was never let finish — the Bellwakes' proof that whatever happened in the deep gallery interrupted someone mid-word. A relic of the Unclosed, and the prize of the deepest gallery.
When Kessa's people finally cleared the deep gallery, they found the dead where they'd fallen — no one had reached them in time to shut their eyes or speak their names, an ending left open the day it happened and open ever since. Kessa cast this little bell from bronze scavenged out of that same gallery, in the old way a mourning-bell is cast, meaning it to mark a grief that never got to say its last word. It did more than mark it. Ring the Last Word near the Unclosed and they startle into the open, staggered mid-step, like something reminding them the word they never finished still hangs there. Held by a Mourner it only aches, a goodbye that won't finish. There is one. Kessa will not say where she found the bronze.
