GAZETTEER · THE MIRRENMERE
The Sunken Stair Road
The old Imperium road that drowns and surfaces island to island across the Mirrenmere — the mere's only dry thread at the slack tide, gone at the flood.
The Imperials cut a paved causeway across the valley before the sea came; when the valley drowned, the road went with it except at the ridgeline crossings. Now it surfaces at low water — a stone road walking into and out of green water, island to island — and vanishes for hours when the tide is wrong. Miss the window and an island you can't swim off becomes your home for half a day.

- →The Sundering — The Imperials cut the Stair Road before the Sundering cracked the valley; when the valley drowned, the road went with it except at the ridgeline crossings.
- →The Drowned Road — The Stair Road is the physical embodiment of the Drowned Road custom — tide-timed navigation is not optional here.
- ←Doreth Sumb — Doreth knows every drowned span of the Stair Road by the colour of the silt and the feel of the current.
- ←The Standing Mast — The Standing Mast is a navigation reference visible from the Stair Road's mid-mere crossings — a waypoint on the drowned route.
- ←The Brine Spring — The Brine Spring island is a waypoint on the Stair Road crossing — travellers stop here because there is nowhere else to drink.
- ←The Drowned Road — The Stair Road is the physical text of the Drowned Road concept — to read one is to understand the other.
- ←A Pilot's Tide Reckoning — The notebook documents the crossing windows for the Stair Road's seven drowned spans.
