The High Room

The Wrights' Heirs' seat in the Guildrows — the locked upper floor above the Far College's reading-hall, where the College's ambitious inner ring keeps the workings it judges too useful to leave dead on a shelf. Adept Maren argues, one flight up, that the old power should be made to work rather than merely catalogued; the College's Censors lose that argument at every vote.

The Far College reads and dates and files the Old Work on the ground floor of the Listening-Post; one flight up, behind a warded door, the Wrights' Heirs decide what to DO with it. The High Room is members-only, pointedly absent from the College's own inventory, and the fault line of the whole institution runs straight through its floorboards. Downstairs the Censors hold that dangerous workings are studied, sealed, and left inert — that the empire's power killed the empire and should be handled like a corpse. Upstairs the Heirs hold that a Vale bleeding out in the Lean Years cannot afford to keep the one real power it has locked in a cabinet, and that the risk of using the old workings is smaller than the certainty of dying without them. Adept Maren is the ring's sharpest voice for making the arcana work again, and she raises it at every College vote and wins the argument and loses the vote, and then goes back upstairs and works anyway. A newcomer reaches the High Room only on the Heirs' invitation, and finds the door in the Vale for anyone willing to wield the dangerous old power on purpose — which is exactly what the careful people one flight below are trying to prevent.
