GAZETTEER · THE NORTHERN REACH
The Drowned Lances
A frozen-bog stretch where a Marrow Lances escort went under the mud in a bad winter — the spear-shafts still stand in the ice and wights walk after dark.
The road braids here because the ground is unreliable, and a traveller who leaves the line to shortcut finds the bog gives way without warning. The spear-shafts that mark the escort's end are the only reliable guide — stay on the side where the banners went to rag, not the side where the shafts lean out over the dark ice. Barrow wights work the stretch from dusk to dawn, which means it is the one place on the road where moving at night is a shorter distance and a longer walk than waiting until morning.
