The Last Column

aka the Hum-Stone, the standing pillar, the navigator's stone

The one fluted bronze pillar still standing in the Leaning Columns field, canted hard to the east, warmer to the touch than any other on a north wind — runners navigate the maze of fallen stone by it.

Stand at its foot and the ground holds warmth underfoot, faint and strange, as if the column's roots still run to the Imperium's forge below. No one knows why this one pillar did not fall when the others did. The runners say it is because it was set a hair deeper than the rest, and when the rest broke, the deeper footing held.

  • Relic-ReadingThe Hum-Stone is the clearest free sample of echo-tuning in the region — standing at its foot, the ground rings underfoot, and the dissonance that kept it upright when the others fell is a natural tuning demonstration.
  • Hessa One-EarHessa uses the Hum-Stone as a navigation landmark and sends newcomers here first — the stone teaches the hum before the deep fields teach it harder.

  • Caer VallenStanding at the Hum-Stone and looking north, Caer Vallen is visible on the terrace above — the stone is the first place from which the seat can be seen above the treeline.
