The Cantor's Broken Seal
aka The Cantor's Half-Note
Half of a bronze sealing-token from the Hushing Deep — a Mourner-Cantor's closing rite, cut short mid-rite when the singer died with the token still unpressed. It steadies a mind the barrow's Unclosed dead are trying to crowd out.
When a Mourner-Cantor dies mid-rite, the bronze seal they were meant to press whole into the barrow door doesn't always finish being pressed. Sometimes it snaps at the hand, half in the door and half in the dying grip, and the half that comes away keeps something of the rite that never got to finish. This is one such half — cold bronze, cut clean through the sealing-mark, all intention and no completion. Held in the deep dark of a barrow full of the Unclosed, it does a little of what the Cantor meant to finish doing: the whispering that isn't yours grows fainter, the urge to answer the dead grows weaker, and a mind stays its own a while longer, because the half-seal is still, in its small way, trying to close something. The Bellwakes covet it to ring their bells over it for the wrong reasons. The Mourners would finish pressing it into a door and be done.
