GAZETTEER · THE EASTERN CRAGS
The Glass Wash
A dry wash floored with wind-polished mesartone that rings underfoot — a sand-lurker ambush ground where the wash meets the Hollow Cut and the wind is loudest.
The wash runs parallel to the mesa wall for three hundred yards before it meets the cave mouth of the Hollow Cut. The mesartone here has been smoothed to a dull shine by centuries of flash-flood and wind, and it rings a clear note underfoot if you step hard — the Bonesung call it the wash that sings back, nothing more mystical than hard rock and hollow ground. The sand-lurkers have learned that the ringing announces prey before prey knows it is being tracked. At the junction with the Hollow Cut the wind from both the mesa throat and the cave mouth hits in opposite phases and the sound becomes something more complex — the same low moan Dabbeth swears rides down off the Tower at dusk, if the Tower were hollow and full of grit.
