The Last Lamp
aka the Wind-Cut waystation, the Vigil-house
A single-room stone waystation crouched just below the Wind-Cut Pass, kept by the Vigil, where a lamp lit by Dame Ysolt Farewatch's own hand has not gone out in thirty years and any traveler who must cross the pass can shelter, eat, and be sent on with a blessing, no tithe asked.
The Vigil built nothing grand here, and nothing grand was needed: four walls of Rampart stone, a hearth, a bench along each wall, and the lamp itself, a plain clay bowl of consecrated oil on an iron bracket by the door, never let to gutter since Ysolt took the Farewatch rank. Travelers who mean to cross the Wind-Cut at dusk — when the tribes say the wind speaks and will not cross after — stop here first, and the ones with sense stay the night instead. There is no altar, no tithe-box, no doctrine posted on the wall; there is bread, a fire, a cot if you need one, and Ysolt or whichever Lamp-Sworn is standing the waystation that season, who will hear your trouble, feed you regardless of what you can pay, and walk you to the cairn-line at first light if the crossing still frightens you. The lamp is the whole of the place's theology: it burns because someone keeps it burning, the same as any oath, and the Vigil has decided that is answer enough to whatever is actually happening when it does.
