The Sowers' Rest

aka Crick's, the halfway table

A wayside taproom-and-byre on the Highbridge road, kept by a widower who compost-tithes to Old Harrow behind the kitchen and swears the milk on the sill is just good sense, not the Good Neighbor's due.

The Sowers' Rest is not a town, just a long low house with a byre grown onto one end and a sign nobody's repainted since the letters were legible: a scythe and a full cup, which travelers now read as an instruction rather than a name. Dammeth Crick keeps it — three rooms upstairs, a common table that seats ten if the bench doesn't give out, and a dung-heap behind the kitchen he turns every frost morning whether or not anyone's watching, because that's the office, not the show. He'll tell you flatly he doesn't hold with gods, and in the same breath he'll set a saucer of milk on the sill before he banks the fire, because his mother did it and the one winter he skipped it the chimney smoked for a month. What makes the Rest worth the stop, beyond the only hot meal between the towns, is Dammeth himself: a big, slow-spoken man who buried a wife and both her parents inside four years to the fever that came up the road with a Highbridge grain-cart, and who answered it by taking in every stray the road sends him since — a Reshi drover's crippled dog, two orphaned farmhands he can't really afford to feed, and any traveler with a story worth the price of supper. He is not warm in the way a hearth is warm. He is warm the way a debt is warm: heavy, certain, and paid whether you asked for it or not. Ask him about the fever and he'll change the subject to the weather, which everyone on the corridor has learned means the subject is closed, not that there's nothing to say.
