GAZETTEER · THE VALE
The Still Room
The Stillwater Order's cloister in the Underbridge — one bare room by the well-court, a mat, a water bowl, and whichever Wandering Cup is passing through. They teach breath and stance and wanting less at dawn, take no fee, and the poorest quarter in the Vale keeps coming back to be taught how to need nothing.
The Stillwater Order owns nothing, so its seat in Highbridge is exactly one room: bare boards by the well-court in the Underbridge, a water bowl, a mat for whoever wears the robe that week. There is a deliberate joke in where it sits — the cloister of wanting-less, planted in the quarter that has the least and wants the most, among the debt-holds and the water-doors and the drowned. The Wandering Cups teach in the well-court at first light: breath, stance, the slow art of needing nothing that no one can take from you, which in the Underbridge is not philosophy but survival. They take no fee, which the city finds deeply suspicious and cannot stop testing, sending the skeptical and the desperate alike to catch the monks wanting something — and the monks want nothing, and the skeptics come back. A newcomer finds here what the rest of Highbridge does not sell: a place to set the pack down, a stance that steadies the sword-hand, and an hour where the ledger and the toll and the roar of the ring do not reach. It is the calmest square yard in a city built on owing, and it is free, which is the whole teaching.
