There is no sign on the Quiet Door, which is the point. It sits on a wet lower lane of the Underbridge, a low fence-cellar with a water-door of its own straight onto the black Vellen — the better for cargo to arrive and leave without troubling the toll-scales upstairs. Behind it a counting desk, an iron strongbox, and stacked cargo that fell off a hull, lit by one warm lamp and a great deal of useful shadow. The Finders keep it here in the smuggling-quarter because everything bound east is weighed at the Span first, and a relic-thief wants to know what crosses before it crosses — and because the Underbridge, with its night-holds and its water-doors, is where the city's business goes when it does not wish to be seen. Draneth the Thin keeps the Quiet — barely — and is a way in for anyone the Ledger has not yet decided to trust.
