GAZETTEER · THE VALE
The Waking Cairn
aka the third cairn, the stone-pile
A traveler's cairn on the Valenfeld–Highbridge road, grown waist-high on four centuries of passing hands adding a stone. The one shrine on the corridor nobody had to build.
Nobody laid the first stone on purpose. The road bends hard here to duck a washout, and the bend is the kind of place a tired walker sets something down — a stone from a boot, a bad-luck coin, whatever's in the hand — and the pile simply never stopped growing. It is taller than a man now, lopsided, ringed by smaller failed cairns where someone tried to start a second one and gave up. Caravan-masters call it the third cairn, counting up from Valenfeld; shepherds call it the Waking Cairn because a body who nods off against it wakes up when the wind turns, which the superstitious take for the Grey Walker keeping half an eye on sleepers this far from a roof. The custom is plain and everyone on the road keeps it without being taught: add a stone as you pass, never take one off. A boy from Valenfeld took a flat one home once to skip on the millpond and broke his ankle in a rabbit hole a week later — the story gets told at every fire on the corridor, usually by someone who wasn't there, and it has done more to keep the cairn honest than any priest could. There is no priest. There has never needed to be one; the pile does the talking. On a clear morning you can see both Valenfeld's smoke and, if you know where to look east past the shoulder of high ground, the first grey line of Highbridge's terrace roofs — which makes the Waking Cairn the actual midpoint of the walk, felt in the legs before it's counted in the maps.
