Captain Sevrin Vossk — human render

PERSONAE · THE VALE

Captain Sevrin Vossk

The Lance-Captain of the Marrow Lances — a grey, exact veteran holding the company's cracked word together by main strength of will.

Vossk has buried more Lances than most companies ever muster, and he carries the Oathblade like a debt rather than a prize. He knows the Broken Lances are real, knows roughly who, and hasn't moved — because the proof that would let him cut them out is the same proof that would tell the Vale the Lances can be bought. He's looking for someone from outside to find that proof. That someone is you.

greetingMarrow Lances. We're the sword the whole vale hires and none of it trusts — which means we keep our word better than anyone, because it's the only thing we sell. You've the look of someone who needs work and can be taught to take it. Want a contract?

guild_contact{"guild_id":"marrow_lances","welcome":"Then you're Lance-Sworn, and your first contract's the dullest kind: ride a silver-wagon down the road to Valenfeld and deliver it whole. Somewhere along it someone friendly will offer you good coin to be looking the wrong way at the wrong moment. Whatever you choose, Adda writes it in the oath-ledger — and that line is where the company decides what you are.","business":"Still owe me that silver-wagon run to Valenfeld. Deliver it whole, keep the oath, and we'll talk about real work."}

topics{"lances":"A free company. We take any contract, which is why we can speak to all five powers and why every one of them half-thinks we spy for the other four. Steel is honest; the trick is keeping the man holding it honest too.","oath":"A paid oath is sacred. Break one mid-contract and the company hunts you — not for spite, for survival. Our word is the only thing we have to sell. Adda keeps the ledger that remembers.","highbridge":"Best muster in the vale. Every road east crosses that span, so every contract worth taking walks past our door sooner or later."}

quest_hook{"topic":"the chain across the road","quest":"lances_chain_road","entry":"Sevrin Vossk has a job no Lance can take. Hewngate Keep — the toll-keep where the vale road pinches between two hills, west of Valenfeld — was hired out to a wing of the company and simply kept by them. The Broken Lances hold it now: his niece Edda in the undercroft, the company's muster-horn nailed to Bron Coldhand's wall. He needs an outsider to walk in, bring out the horn and the proof the keep was bought, and leave the war unstarted. Decide for yourself how much of a broken oath is worth keeping."}, {"topic":"the redhook crew","quest":"lances_clear_redhook","entry":"Captain Vossk is paying out of the company purse to clear the Redhook crew off the EAST road out of Vallenfield — road-thieves grown bold enough to camp in plain sight and rob carts within sight of the gate. The bounty is on their chief, Vera Redhook, who carries a hooked boarding-axe and gave the crew its name. Find the camp east of town, cut through her crew, and put her down — then bring the word back to Vossk to collect."}, {"topic":"the ash covenant","quest":"lances_clear_ash_covenant","entry":"There's a standing contract out of the ash-flats. The Ash Covenant — Asheni fire-zealots who burn holdings to feed their broken god — keep a pyre-camp in the Ashen Wastes that never goes cold, under one Vorr Ash-Tongue. The company pays to put the fire out: find Pyrewatch Camp, cut through the Covenant, and end Vorr."}, {"topic":"the drowned fangs","quest":"lances_clear_drowned_fangs","entry":"A contract off the Mirrenmere shore. The Drowned Fangs — Hessk raiders who drag travellers into the cold and let the water finish them — den at a half-flooded camp under Sresh the Underpull. Find the Drowned Camp, fight to the waterline, and put Sresh down before he puts you under."}, {"topic":"the reshi marauders","quest":"lances_clear_reshi_marauders","entry":"Merchant coin backs this one. The Reshi Marauders bleed the Driftmarket caravans dry from the dark, led by Kavi Gold-Eye, who knows the routes because the road raised her. Find the Dust Camp off the southern road and put her down — the caravans will pay well to have it done."}, {"topic":"the deepclan reavers","quest":"lances_clear_deepclan_reavers","entry":"A contract out of the Northern Reach. The Deepclan Reavers — exile Stoneborn who break open the Imperium's barrows to melt the grave-bronze — fight in a wall of stolen armour under Borin Clan-Breaker. Find their forge-camp among the barrows, break the shield-wall, and end him."}, {"topic":"the vyr discord","quest":"lances_clear_vyr_discord","entry":"A grim one, out of the Eastern Hills. The Vyr Discord take captives to feed to the Sundering's broken chord, in a totem-camp where the air hums wrong. The thing that leads them answers only to the Unstrung Chord, and it does not sleep. Find the Ringing Camp and silence it."}, {"topic":"the korl warband","quest":"lances_clear_korl_warband","entry":"A hard contract out of the Eastern Crags. The Korl War-Band — giant-blooded raiders who put a toll on every unwalled holding — muster under Hall Giant-Reckoner, head and shoulders over any man, with a frost-iron maul. Find the Reckoner's Warcamp, get past the giants, and put Hall down."}, {"topic":"the skritch warren","quest":"lances_clear_skritch_warren","entry":"A contract out of the Eastern Hills. The Skritch Warren — a teeming goblin mass that raids the herds and scatters at a fair fight — holds together only because of the Gnash-King, a goblin grown big and cruel enough to be worse than the dark. Find the Skritch Stockade and cut him down; the warren breaks without him."}, {"topic":"the grimtusk clan","quest":"lances_clear_grimtusk_clan","entry":"The highest contract on the board, and the deadliest. Grimtusk the Tyrant holds the whole Sered Spur — an old, vast orc warlord who has driven goblins and Stoneborn alike off their ground and carries a cleaver notched for every chief he's unmade. Find Grimtusk's Muster, survive his clan, and end him. Few think it can be done."}, {"topic":"the frostmaw brood","quest":"lances_clear_frostmaw_brood","entry":"The contract no Lance will take. The Frostmaw Brood holds the only road through the high passes, denned around the Troll-King — a frost-scarred dire troll that heals faster than you can hurt it. The company lost men up there. If you mean to open the road north, find the Frostmaw Den and burn the Troll-King down — fire is the one thing its flesh won't knit back."}

Vandahl's coin, the wing's wage, the keep sold before a sword was drawn. That's a war I can win at the muster-table instead of the gate. The company owes you, and the company pays its debts — that's the only thing we've ever sold. Edda will find her own road home; she always does. Go well, Lance-friend."},{"key":"keep","label":"✦ I kept the horn. The toll's mine now.","say":"...So that's how it is. You walked into a bought keep and bought it again, with our brass on your hip. I won't come for you — I haven't the men, and you know it. But every Lance who keeps his oath will know your face by spring, and the road is long and the company is everywhere. voice_notesGrey and flat, a man who has said every hard thing so many times it no longer costs him anything to say it. Talks in casualty figures and marching distances. Gives orders as facts, not requests. The one tell that he cares is that he never says a dead Lance's name aloud — he says 'the man we lost at' and then the place.
secretThe reason he has not moved on the Broken Lances is not caution — it is that twenty years ago, a younger Vossk took coin to march his company slow and let an ambush land, and men died of it, and he has spent every year since being the incorruptible captain to bury the once he was not. The proof that would let him cut the Broken Lances out is the same kind of proof that exists about him, in a strongbox he knows the location of and cannot bring himself to burn. To hang the bought men, he must risk becoming one of them in the telling. He wants an outsider to find the proof because an outsider will not know to look sideways at him.
