THE LORE · THE VALE

Relic-Reading

The Far College's signature craft: reading a sealed Old Work mechanism by feel and instrument until it opens safe in your hands instead of in your face. Mastered, it is the only known road to handling the Wright's Shard itself.

Reading is to a sealed Old Work working what a lockpick's ear is to a lock. A Reader learns to still their own hurry and go by the metal's own grain — the give in a hinge-plate, the drag in a catch, the exact moment a warded seam wants to be pushed rather than forced. Get it right and four centuries of dead engineering opens like it was made yesterday, because it was, once. Get it wrong and it opens anyway, just not the way you wanted, and you're carried out on a stretcher instead of carrying anything out yourself. The Deep Readers push the craft further, deliberately exposing themselves to the still-live crack the Drawing-Down left in the oldest workings, hunting the edge of what a mechanism can do before it does it to them instead — which is the first sign of becoming riven in miniature. Sighting-glasses and tuned picks amplify the craft; true mastery of it is the only road anyone has found to handling the Wright's Shard itself without it handling you.

  • The UnclosedRelic-Reading and the Unclosed share the same haunted ground: a College reader working a sealed vault is working exactly where an ending was left open, and the dead notice.
  • The First ForkIt amplifies the tuner's art — does half the still-yourself-and-match-the-pitch work for you.
  • The VyrThe Vyr read a raw Old Work mechanism into something usable where another hand would only get hurt.
  • The Stilling of the First WorkingThe Stilling is the founding proof of echo-tuning.
  • The Unclosing of the Deep ListenersThe line the College named for the Listeners it unmade.
  • quest.the-lost-note (unresolved)The Fork does half a Listener's tuning for them — the quest escalates the opener's caged-shard art into the field.
  • The Hollow MesaThe resonators in the Hollow Mesa vault still hum with the pre-Sundering tuning that makes echo-tuning legible — the prize the Resonants want.
  • The Weeping StonesThe Far College's Relic-Readers have noted that the Weeping Stones bead the same warm, metal-tasting water as the Weeping Vault's door seal — they believe the stones are a physical extension of the same buried seal-mechanism.
  • The Hermit's First RiddleThe riddle encodes echo-tuning knowledge — scholars of the practice can decode it.
  • The Vael PillarThe Vael Pillar is a working Imperium power-source — it feeds a nearby spell-circle straight from the pillar instead of the caster, exactly the kind of find Relic-Readers spend a career hoping to touch once.
  • Pine ElkThe elk's avoidance of the column-fields is the plainest observable evidence that something in the old Imperium works is still active and affecting living things.
  • quest.reading-the-note (unresolved)Echo-tuning is the mechanism the quest turns on — reading the aqueduct's resonators to tune the hall's approach.
  • The Last ColumnThe Hum-Stone is the clearest free sample of echo-tuning in the region — standing at its foot, the ground rings underfoot, and the dissonance that kept it upright when the others fell is a natural tuning demonstration.
  • The Shut ReliquaryThe Shut Reliquary's resonators still pulse — the vault is a living example of Imperium echo-architecture frozen mid-operation.
  • Saltglass Instrument ShardThe shard is a partial Relic-Reading teaching piece — studying it teaches something real about the tolerances the empire's engineers cut their bronze to.
