PERSONAE · THE VALE

Vashka

aka Vashka of the Deep Door, the Diver-Mother, She Who Asks the Lady

Keeper of the Long-Water Shrine and lead diver of the Underbridge — a Hessk who goes down into the black Vellen on a held breath to bring up the drowned, so the Mourners can close them and the families can grieve a body instead of a doubt. She has recovered more of Highbridge's dead than the burial rolls hold, and keeps a green lamp burning that she will not let go out.

The Vellen takes people — off the bridge, off the barges, out of the water-doors on a bad night — and the Hessk are the ones who go and ask for them back. Vashka keeps the Long-Water Shrine at the wet edge of the Underbridge and leads the dives, and she is very old for a diver, which among the Hessk means she is very good and very lucky and has buried most of the ones who taught her. Her creed is plain and she will not have it called superstition: the Lady of the Long Water keeps the drowned, whole, in the deep, and returns them only when asked correctly, and the asking is done with the body — a held breath, a long rope, a descent into the cold black to find what the river hid and bring it up into the light so it can be properly closed. She has brought up more of the city's dead than the Hush-House has names for. Vashka is the warm heart of a cold quarter. When the river takes someone, a family comes to her, not to the great chantry on the terrace — the terrace sings the dead of the great, but the Underbridge drowns the poor, and Vashka is who the poor can afford and trust. She dives for coin when there is coin and for nothing when there is not, and she works with old Mourner Ithal up at the Hush-House the way a midwife works with a priest: she brings the body into the light, the Mourners close it, and between them a drowning becomes a death that a family can survive. She keeps the green lamp at the water-stair burning always, and the one thing that can frighten this fearless woman is a draught near it, because the divers believe a lightless water-door is one the Lady stops giving back through — and Vashka has been down enough times to have her own private reasons for not testing whether that is true. She has a soft spot for the widow Mera, whose drowned husband keeps gently coming home; Vashka has never told Mera that the body was never recovered, because some things the Lady keeps are better left kept.

wantTo bring the river's dead up into the light, so no family in the Underbridge has to grieve a doubt instead of a body.
flawShe spares people the truths she judges unbearable — a mercy that shades into keeping secrets the bereaved might have a right to.
secretShe never recovered Widow Mera's drowned husband and has let the widow believe otherwise; she tells herself some of what the Lady keeps is better left kept.
tellShe is unshakeable about everything except the green lamp; a draught near it stops her mid-sentence and she will not continue until it steadies.
voice_notesCalm, low, water-worn; speaks of the Lady and the deep as plain fact, not faith, and of drowning without flinching. Gentle with the grieving, blunt with the curious. 'The river does not lose them, friend. It keeps them. You ask right, and cold as it is down there, sometimes she hands one back. Sometimes. I will not lie to you about how often.'
