Sand Lurker

A buried ambusher of the flats that lies under a hand's-breadth of red dust and takes the leg of whatever walks over it.

The flats look empty, which is the lurker's whole argument. It surfaces once, fast, then sinks to wait again. The hold's old wells are ringed with the bones of those who knelt to drink.
