Korlwatch, the Wight-Lord's Shield

An oversized iron grave-shield from the Korl high-passage tomb above the column-fields, buried with the wight-lord who held the pass before there was a pass. Five hundred years down and it has not rusted — raised, it turns a blow the way the pass itself turns an army: flatly, and without apology.

The Korl buried their greatest at what is now called the Lance-Barrow before the Vallen Imperium was a dream, and cut-stone Imperium masonry was layered over the Korl burial later, as if later hands meant to claim what they didn't understand. Among the oversized iron grave-goods — lances, a broad blade, and this shield, all scaled for hands bigger than a living Vale-born's — the shield is the piece the wight-lord never sets down. It is not decorated; Korl grave-goods rarely are. It is a slab of iron with a boss like a fist and a rim that has stopped more than one grave-robber's pick from ever reaching the dais. Raised in the wight-lord's grip, or in a living hand that can lift it, it does not merely block — it answers, the way the pass answered every army that tried to walk through it before the Sundering broke the roads that mattered.
