A Held Breath
A clouded bead of pale salt-glass from the cold country near the Karth — cast, the tellings say, over a Stillwater monk who sat down to still his breath and never started it again. It steadies the hands and the heart of whoever holds it.
Somewhere on the road to the tarn a Stillwater monk sat down to still his breath and simply never started it again, and the cold and mineral-thick water did what it does out there: crept over him slow and left, when the ice was chipped away years later, only this — a clouded bead of salt-glass, cool and weighing like calm, holding nothing of him but the shape of the stillness he chose. It is not haunted; his ending was his own, finished exactly as he meant it, and nothing lingers that wasn't asked to. Carry it and the body's noise quiets a little in sympathy: the hands don't shake, the heart doesn't race, fear finds less to grip. The Order calls it the empty hand made small enough to pocket — and says, gently, that carrying it is not the same as sitting down yourself.
