The Saltless Barrow-Key
A carved linchpin-stone pulled from the Saltless Barrow's innermost seal — shaped in a script no ash-tribe gravesinger will name, and warm to the touch in a way stone should not be.
The Cinder Quorum's excavation team found it seated in a mortice at the centre of the inner seal-door, and one digger pried it loose before Sevda could tell him not to. It is palm-sized, basalt-grey, carved in a continuous line of script that runs in a spiral so tight the characters are illegible unless the stone is held at arm's length and turned slowly. It is warm. Stone should not be warm in a cave this deep. The digger who took it out of the mortice is the one who has not spoken since.
