ITEMS · THE SERED SPUR
The Seal of the Unbuilt Stair
A triangular seal cut for a stair whose first tread was never laid.
Its face shows ascending steps that narrow to a blank apex. Press it into clay and the steps rise in relief, but every count gives one tread fewer than the last. The back bears careful cancellation strokes, the Vyr mark for a work judged sound in drawing and forbidden in stone.
