The Sealing-Order Fragment

A rubbing of the Imperium's sealing-order cut into the lintel at the Imperial Reach — the specific alloy recipe and casting sequence the legion's engineers used to bind the vault-weeper. Sethe wants it; the Listening College wants it more.

Scraped onto a sheet of bark-cloth at the lintel of the Imperial Reach: a page of Legion engineering notation describing the casting sequence struck at the moment the Vault door was sealed. Three columns — alloy ratio, quench temperature, hold-time — and a note in the margin that the binding requires a living hand to hold the final rivet-pin in place until the bronze sets cold. The Sealed Choir will recognise the notation, its careful columns echoing the shape of their own hymn-sheets; the Listening College will recognise what the marginal note means for running the casting sequence in reverse and cracking the seal open.
