Every Stonewright swears 'by the first cooling, which held' without knowing quite what it means anymore; Wrightmother Hodda Deepvein knew exactly what she meant when she had the first ruled ore off the Unruled Vein forged into a single maul and not sold, priced, or ledgered as ordinary stock. It is Deepvein work through and through, dense, plain, built to outlast the hand that swings it, and its head still carries a faint warmth long after the forge, as if the argument that made it is still cooling. The Moot's ruling on the vein rode on whoever settled the breach first; this maul is what got made once the settling was done.
