ITEMS · THE VALE
The Sundered Crown
The crown of the last emperor of Vallen, cracked clean through at the moment the Sundering broke his city and his god — and never repaired, and never let finish, in all the years since. The one thing that could make the Hollow Writ's claim on the Vale real.
It is bronze and bone and a band of grey temple-metal, split from brow to nape by a single crack that has never closed and never will. The last Imperator of Vallen wore it when Caer Vallen came down, and by every account he lived years after, uncrowned in every way that matters, never abdicating and never crowning a successor — an empire's authority, left hanging open the day the god who backed it died. Set the crown on your head and others feel that unfinished authority reach for them: foes falter, the weak-willed kneel, your own people stand straighter, because a crown that ruled a god-empire does not entirely forget how to be obeyed. But wear it too long and the crown starts to believe you are the emperor it never got to properly hand off to — the wearer begins to feel, faintly and then less faintly, that an empire's worth of dead subjects are still owed a ruler, and a mind can lose its edges trying to be one for people four hundred years gone. The Hollow Writ knows exactly what it is: not a relic, but a legitimacy. Crown a Writ governor with it and the Vale stops being a frontier and starts being a province — whatever it costs the governor's own head to hold that unfinished crown down.
