The Last Hold
A knuckle of grey mineral flowstone from deep in the Karth — formed, slow year on year, around a climber's final grip on the rock before the dark took them. It lends a carrier a little of that desperate sureness of hand and foot.
The Karth Deep swallows climbers, and one of them held on so hard at the end that the rock kept the shape of it: mineral-rich water crept over the dead hand for years until the grip itself was cast in grey flowstone, a knuckle of stone that grips the palm back when you close your hand around it. Carry it and your own grip answers — surer footing on bad ground, a steadier hand on a sheer hold, the strength that comes only when falling is the alternative. It does not tell you the climber fell anyway, and the body is still down there somewhere, unburied and unclosed. Old Work miners are tactful that way — they take the stone and leave the rest be.
