A black rule that beads with pale dust where old joints lie hidden under newer stone.

Its edge is blunt and bears no numbered marks. Draw it across a repaired wall and pale grains gather above every former seam, even through plaster and paint. The middle span is warped by heat, so straight joints appear there as shallow bows.
