The Marrowfold Grave Token

A flat disc of dark temple-bronze carved with a mark no Vandahl mason made, found in the elder sealed chambers of Marrowfold Cairn — older than the house, and worth more to some than the silver ever was.

The elder dead of Marrowfold Cairn used tokens like this to mark rank in a way that predates House Vandahl's ranked-niche system entirely. This one was cast from a grade of temple-bronze the house's masons never found and couldn't have worked if they had. It carries the same fine green patina every piece of Old Work wears after four centuries shut in the dark, and it is heavier in the hand than a disc its size should be — good casting, the mark of a smith long dead. The Lower Wardens would very much like to know where you found it. The Listening College would very much like you to give it to them, on the theory that a rank-token cut from unmatched bronze might still be tuned, somehow, to whatever the elder dead were marking. The token itself has no opinion. It is a very old piece of very good bronze, and it keeps its own counsel.
