The Bought Oath-Horn
The Marrow Lances' muster-horn, sounded to call the company to a contract — carried off to Hewngate Keep by the wing that broke its oath, and blown now to call men to a chain instead of a banner. In a true hand it still rallies; in Bron Coldhand's it only collects.
A long curl of horn capped in grey company-bronze, older than any Lance now living, that the Marrow Lances sound to muster a wing to its sworn work. When the Broken Lances took Hewngate they took the horn with the keep, and Bron Coldhand keeps it on the toll-hall wall like a deed of sale — proof, to anyone who matters, that the company's word can be bought along with its brass. Sound it and the note carries an old command older men's bones still answer: those who fight beside the bearer stand steadier, and those who hear it falter remember they once swore something. It does not care whose mouth blows it, which is the whole tragedy — the Old Lances want it back not for its worth but because a muster-horn in a keep-holder's hand is the broken oath made audible, ringing out over a road of caged travellers.
