Widowmark, the Elder's Longbow

A longbow strung with sinew that has not rotted in longer than the Sered line has held its name, buried with an elder dead in the sealed cairn beneath the Sered Catacombs — a dead who answers to no Warden and no lineage-rank. Loosed, it does not miss what it means to hit, and the wound it opens keeps opening.

House Vandahl's masons cut the Sered Catacombs downward through stone they thought empty and found Marrowfold Cairn beneath their own dead — sealed chambers older than any Vandahl niche, holding an elder who predates the house's whole claim to the Spur. The bow was buried across the elder's chest, restrung and re-oiled as if someone meant to use it again. No lineage rank carved into the Sered stonework explains who they were; the Lower Wardens will not go down far enough to ask, and the Broken Lances who go looking for grave-gold never come back with the bow, only with reasons they turned around. Drawn, the string does not creak. Loosed, the arrow does not wander — old grief does not forgive a miss, and whatever kept this hand steady for as long as it has been dead keeps it steady still. A wound from it does not close clean; it keeps bleeding the way a debt keeps compounding once the interest starts.
