The Last Census of Vallen
The master ledger of the Vallen Imperium — every vault, tribute-hoard, and buried treasury of a dead empire, tallied the year before it fell. The Gaunt Ledger would trade a guild for it, because it is a map of where all the dead bronze went.
A great codex bound in hide threaded through with fine wire of temple-bronze, its pages cold and the wire in the binding faintly restless, written in an imperial hand that counted everything an empire owned right up until the empire stopped existing. It is not magic in the way a blade or a crown is — it is worse. It is information. The Last Census names every vault Vallen sealed, every tribute it buried for safekeeping against a bad year that became the worst year, every treasury the Sundering left buried and the centuries forgot. Hold it low and near the ground and the bronze wire in the binding pulls, faint and certain, toward the nearest of those caches — the same restless pull any two pieces of temple-bronze have for each other, a known property of the old alloy that no living smith can explain any better than they can reproduce the metal itself. Calder Voss of the Gaunt Ledger has wanted it for thirty years. Whoever holds it holds the location of more lost wealth than the living Vale contains — which is exactly the kind of thing that gets a person quietly killed.
