The frost-rimed war-maul of Torva Wall-Holder, who held the retreat at the Wind-Cut Pass and fell there with the honor-guard. Grave-goods sealed by the Korl right, and released, at last, by the High Moot's own sanction.
When the High Moot pulled its holds back over the water to the Rimeward, Torva Wall-Holder's guard bought the withdrawal time at the mainland pass and never came down. Their arms lay where they fell for a generation, technically abandoned and by Korl custom untouchable all the same, until the honor-guard's dead were finally carried across for burial and their standing wrong was set right. The maul is unornamented iron, head cold to the touch even in a warm hand, and heavier than its size argues for. A Korl who sees it carried knows exactly what carrying it costs: the sanction rite, said once, in front of the whole gathered Moot.
