Oén's Empty Bowl
The worn begging bowl of Master Oén of the Stillwater Order — a relic whose entire power is that it wants nothing, and teaches its carrier, for a while, to want nothing either. The Unclosed find no purchase in a hand that isn't reaching, and a still hand shakes less.
A plain wooden bowl, cracked once and mended with sap, light as a held breath. Oén carried it for forty years and filled it with as little as he could. Its power is not a thing it does but a thing it refuses: the Unclosed cling to unfinished want — a debt unpaid, a hunger unmet, a grasping that never let go — and the bowl, and the one who holds it as Oén taught, grasps at nothing at all. There is nothing in an empty hand for a haunting to catch on. It is the gentlest ward in the Vale against the lingering dead, and the hardest to use, because it works exactly as well as you are empty, and no better. Stillwater adepts also swear by it against the salvor's shakes — a carrier who has truly set their wanting down breathes slower and holds steadier, and Verdigris Lung takes hold slower in a body that isn't already trembling with need. Oén never dug a vault in his life and never needed to; the bowl doesn't stop the green dust from settling in your chest, but it steadies the hand that has to work through it.
