A Pan-Shard
A thumb of raw temple-bronze panned from the flooded Sunken Cut — the thing the Deepcut Pans risk the ash-hounds for, and the seed of every relic the powers fight over.
Where the silver gave out, the Cut salted itself with these: cloudy slivers of temple-bronze scrap, cold and green-crusted in the lamp-light, worked loose from some larger casting long since torn apart by four centuries underwater. Uncut and unbound, a pan-shard is only worth what the Ledger will pay — it's the same Old Work bronze as the grander finds the powers actually fight over, just scaled down to a coin. The Pans work the flooded Cut wet, fast, and never longer than they can hold their breath twice over, because the vault's bad air does to lungs what bad air always does, and a Pan who lingers to fill one more sack is a Pan the Cut keeps. The ones who don't know to sell fast and get out are why the Pans know.
