The Keeper's Vigil
A bead of pale salt-glass off the leaning beacon at Gull's Watch — cast, they say, over a keeper who died at his post and kept watching anyway, his ending never properly closed. It lends a carrier a little of that unclosed, patient sight.
The last keeper of Gull's Watch died at his post and never noticed, and watched on — nobody sat with him after, nobody shut his eyes, nobody snuffed his lantern for him, so the watch he was keeping never got closed the way it should have. What's left of it set into a pale bead of salt-glass that still strains at the dark, one small unclosed corner of the Vale's dead. Hold it and the night thins for you — shapes in gloom, movement at the water's edge, the thing waiting just past the lantern's reach. The Tide-Pickers prize it for obvious reasons and lose it to the tide for the same. A patient priest would tell you the kindest thing to do with it is finally shut his eyes for him and let the watch end — nobody's done it yet.
