ITEMS · THE VALE
Holy Thunderforce
A longsword the old tellings say Vallen the Wright forged himself, the way he forged every oath — true, and witnessed, and meant to hold. Drawn, it does not gleam so much as crack the air, and a blow lands like the sky deciding something.
The old tellings say the Wright made law and weapon the same way — by measuring true and standing witness over the join — and this is the one blade left that still holds his hand in it: a length of pale steel that no smith since the Sundering has been able to reforge, not because the metal is strange but because the making was perfect and nobody living remembers how the Wright worked. Whether the storm caught in it is a piece of the god himself or simply the finest tempering the Imperium's priest-engineers ever achieved, no one now can say — the books that would answer it are ash or locked in Aelvyrenn. What the sword does is not in question. Bear it and every clean strike grounds a caught bolt of lightning through the thing you hit, scoring it white and stopping its heart for a beat the way a real strike of lightning stops a heart, and the wound carries a heat that is not quite fire and not quite holy and burns as both. The Resonants would give a wing of Caer Vallen to learn how the storm was caught and kept; the Sealed Choir insists it should never have been made, because a god's hand is not a tool to be swung. It was made anyway. It still cracks.

- →Vallen's Barrow — Holy Thunderforce was sealed in a barrow-warden's reliquary in Vallen's Barrow, where the keepers laid the Wright's last true-forged blade away.

- →The Sworn Gods — The blade is the work of Vallen the Forge-Singer, who 'made law and weapon both by sounding them true' — the only sword that still carries his note.
- →The Five Elements — In the Old Reckonings' telling, the caught storm in the steel is Aether barely cooled into matter — the highest element grounded through a foe as divine lightning; the sword's own account is simpler: a peerless smith's tempering, or a god's real hand, and no one now can say which.
- ←The Wrights' Heirs — The Resonants would give a wing of Caer Vallen to study the note set into the blade — the cleanest surviving sample of a god's voice in steel.
