ITEMS · THE TIDEWRACK NARROWS
The Keeper's Bare Hands
A pair of worn leather grip-wraps left coiled on the rail at Gull's Watch — the lighthouse keeper's own, from a night the story says a customs-cutter crew came up the ladder meaning to collect more than a bribe and went back down slower than they came up.
Gull's Watch is a Silt Hands arrangement dressed as an Imperial sea-mark: the keeper is paid by both sides and trusted by neither, and keeps the fire lit for reasons that have nothing to do with mercy. Nobody at the Watch will confirm the story about the crew that came up the ladder wrong, only that the current keeper doesn't carry a blade and has never needed one, and that the wraps on the rail get retied every morning like they still matter. They're plain leather, sweat-dark, wound tight enough to matter in a fight — nothing about them looks like a relic until you've felt what a bare-handed strike does when they're on.
