The Saltsung Compass
The oldest relic in the Saltsung Barrow — a bronze mariner's disc inscribed with the drowned-rite tide-marks, that warms faintly to the touch when wet and points always toward the nearest flooded place.
The captains and navigators the old rite laid upright in the salt above the tide kept this between them in rotation — one would die with it, and the next interment would take it from the niche and carry it a while longer. It has crossed the whole narrows a hundred times in dead hands and retains the orientation. Wet it with brine and the needle turns toward water, gently and without fail — a drowned-place compass as long as the sea is somewhere ahead, which here it always is.
