The Frostmaw Shard
A raw chunk of temple-bronze locked in the blue ice at the bottom of Frostmaw Cave — the find the oldest Rime-Skinner forbids anyone to dig toward. Enormous power, dense enough with old green dust to give a carrier Verdigris Lung early.
Down past the stalkers' den the ice goes clear and a shard of raw temple-bronze hangs in it like something mid-fall, still bright where the ice has kept the air off it. Cut it free and it answers a strike with a peal of cold force that staggers anything near. It also answers you all the time in a worse way: the shard is thick with old verdigris dust that four centuries in a sealed, wet, airless pocket of ice never let settle, and a carrier learns fast why the Skinners leave it — the cough starts within days, the hands shake within weeks, and the mind goes soft years before it should for anyone who keeps the thing on them. There is also, the Skinners say, a body frozen with it that nobody has ever properly buried — which is reason enough on its own not to dig toward the ringing sound the ice makes when it shifts. A magnificent, stupid thing to own.
