ITEMS · THE VALE
Imperator's Word
The longsword the last Imperator of Vallen drew as his city came down around him — the killing stroke he began at the instant of the Drawing-Down and, in the temple-bronze fused into the blade, never got to finish. The Resonants would burn the Vale to take it apart.
A plain imperial longsword, but cold in a way iron is not, and there's a fitting of dense temple-bronze worked into the crossguard that rings a low, true note when struck — the mark of casting no living smith can match. The Imperator drew it to strike something — a traitor, a god, the catastrophe itself, the tellings disagree — and whatever the blow was aimed at, it never landed. He died mid-swing, and the ending was never finished: no one closed his eyes, no one buried him properly, no one ever confirmed what he struck at or whether he hit it. That unfinished ending is what lingers in the sword — not sound made solid, but the Imperator's last unclosed moment, caught in Vallen's own bronze and still, in some sense, falling. Wielding it lends a fraction of an emperor's terrible certainty: strikes land with an authority that is felt as much as suffered, the cowed cow further, and a wavering line of foes can simply break. The Resonants understand what it actually is — the cleanest piece of the Last Guest's unfinished business ever found, fused into the finest Old Work anyone's dug up — and consider any price short of the Vale itself a bargain to take it apart and learn how the Imperium worked its bronze.
