The Multidex
An Old Work survey instrument repaired around a Codex spine, able to read the danger of ground and thresholds, identify living subjects, and fix what it sees as Field Plates in the book.
The first plate is dark brass, the second clouded glass, and the third appears only when the instrument is held to the eye. Old Work marks along the rim compare the viewed world against whatever has been bound into the bearer's Codex. A road becomes a danger estimate. A delve mouth gives the strength of its entry galleries without betraying what waits deeper. A living creature held steady in the nested frame gives a combat reading and, when fixed as a Field Plate, opens its place in the book. The Explorer's Guild does not make Multidexes. It recovers them, repairs what it can, and gives the first working one to a new surveyor because the instrument makes the Guild's rule practical: go far, come home, and tell true. It carries no charge, film, or ration. Its cost is attention.
