The Drover's Ledger-Stone
A salt-cured tally-stone from under the wrecked caravan's floorboards — not the goods the first looters grabbed, but the record of what the goods really were and who they were really for. A rare lodestone-like stone that still pulls toward the last route walked.
The scavengers stripped the Drover's Wreck of everything that shone and left the one thing worth carrying: a flat grey stone the lead drover thumbed his tally into, cured hard by the salt that killed his team. It is half ledger and half lodestone — the salt worked its way into the stone's grain the way it works into everything out here, and somewhere in that process it picked up a faint, real pull toward the iron fittings the caravan buried: every cache they hid against the heat, every waymark they cut, the dry wells and the false ones. Hold it and the drovers' old route tugs faintly underfoot, the buried stops drawing the stone like a compass needle finding true. The drovers were running more than salt-fish, and the stone knows for whom; that knowing is worth more than the cargo ever was, to the right buyer and the wrong one alike.
