Wintersun
A mage's focus carved from a single core of black ice that has never melted — a low cold sun caught in glass. Held in the off hand it does not warm to the palm; it cools the caster, and the frost they call comes harder and crueller for it.
There is a doctrine among the cold-country casters of the Far College — one strand of the Old Reckonings that never quite died out here — holding that the Sundering did not only crack a god, it cracked a season, and somewhere a winter is still falling that never reaches the ground. Nobody can prove it, and most of the College rolls its eyes at the ones who still teach it as anything more than a pretty old story. Whether the doctrine is right or just a story, Wintersun is real: a splinter of black ice that has never melted, set in a smith's glass and bound as a focus — a dark orb with a pale ring turning slow inside it, like a sun seen through a mile of ice. A caster who holds it draws the deep cold through themselves first — it wards their flesh against frost almost wholly — and lets it out sharpened, so every frost-spell they cast bites far past its making. It is no use to a warrior; it does nothing in a fist. But in the off hand of someone who knows the cold glyphs, it makes the killing winter answer.
