The First Fork
A tuning-fork of dense temple-bronze lost in the Karth Deep, older than the Listening College — by some accounts the first tool anyone used to find true Old Work bronze by its ring on purpose. It amplifies a Listener's craft the way a staff amplifies a spell.
Struck, it gives a note you feel rather than hear, and any true temple-bronze in earshot answers back at the same pitch — real sympathetic ring between two things cast to the same exacting tolerance, the way one well-made bell will always answer another. The College teaches this as a still-yourself-and-match-the-pitch craft, part instrument, part patient ear; the First Fork does half that work for a carrier, ringing true off Old Work far past their training and letting a Listener find, and hold a bead on, salvage that would otherwise stay buried and silent. It was lost in the Karth when the Imperium fell, down where the leeches are and the Drawing-Down's damage still runs deepest, and the College has wanted it back for longer than the College has had its current name.
