PERSONAE
Corren the Last
aka The Last Imperator of Vallen, Imperator Corren Vael
The last Imperator of Vallen, who stood in Caer Vallen the hour the god died and the empire's eastern seat came down on top of the knowing. Four centuries dead, he is the name every seal in the Vale is still stamped under — and, though no one living knows it, the one human authority who saw the sky bleed the god and understood too late what he had been made to bless.
Corren Vael was the frontier viceroy the far capital sent east to keep the god's march in order, and the throne he answered to went silent the same year he died — so he is, technically and absurdly, the last authority the Hollow Writ can name. He came to Caer Vallen for a triumph, not a funeral. The Vyr had brought their great work to the seat of the failing god, and they had told the Imperium what a proud, frightened empire most wanted to hear: that the engine would SUSTAIN Vallen, lend the tiring maker the tireless strength of the sky, hold the world's making steady against the lean years already gnawing at the edges. Corren wore the Crown to witness the rite of lending and put the Imperator's blessing on it. He blessed it. That is the part that has never left the stone. Because the engine did not lend. It drew. Whether the Vyr lied to him or lied to themselves, whether the machine simply ran the only way such a machine can run, Corren watched the working begin as a gift and understood, in the last clear minutes of the Vallen Imperium, that it was a theft — that the sky was not filling his god but emptying him, tapping the maker like a spring to float a heaven, and that the blessing on it was his. The god cracked. Caer Vallen came down. The Crown cracked on his brow and did not kill him cleanly, and he died somewhere in the long collapse with the whole shape of the truth in him and no one left standing to tell it to. The Asheni keep his name as the man who buried their god by accident; the Writ keeps it as the mandate they enforce; a very few, who have read the effaced things in the deepest halls of Caer Vallen, keep it as the name of the one witness from below — the Imperator who saw the Tap and blessed it and took the knowing down into the dark. The dead in the column-field keep it best of all, because a crown like that is a very patient thing to wait under.
