Chapter 252

The Longwater

also called the Longwater strait, the Longwater Trench

The strait between the Mirrenmere capes and the Silkstrand's north coast — a mile and a bit of hazarded blue water with Sresh-Dar on its floor. It takes its name from the drowned trench the Hessk city grew in.

The Longwater is the water the Silkstrand and the mainland share: a strait roughly a mile and a third across, running between the pink-stone Mirrenmere capes and the salt shore, deep enough down its middle that the old canon called its floor the Longwater Trench. Sresh-Dar sits on that floor, a Hessk city under the strait rather than upon any shore, so the Longwater is a trade lane in three layers at once — sailed and flown above, dived and pressure-belled between, and walked dry in the vaults below. The Keepers of the Deep hold the salvage-rights of the trench and cut the Longwater compacts with the Wheelmoot's road-nation so the goods keep moving up the dry road to the Silkstrand and down again. It is more dangerous than any road and never empty of a next landfall in sight.
